2021/2022 DAAD CERM-ESA Scholarship Application for Master and PhD Program

2021/2022 DAAD CERM-ESA Scholarship Application for Master and Ph.D. Program. The 2021 DAAD scholarship program is for graduates and undergraduate students! from Sub-Saharan Africa. The application portal is open for interested students to register as the application closing date is on 15th December 2020.

The program is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It has been agreed upon that DAAD cooperates with the Centre of Excellence for Educational Research Methodologies and Management (CERM-ESA) by offering up to 8 In-Country/In-Region Scholarships for Ph.D. and Master studies at CERM-ESA for the intake 2021.

The target group for scholarships is graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a first academic degree if applying for a Master’s program, or with a Master’s degree if applying for a doctoral program who want to pursue Master’s or Ph.D. courses, either;

  1. In their home country (In-Country scholarships are aimed at students who study in their home country or in the country for which they have a residence permit.) -or
  2. In another sub-Saharan African country (In-Region scholarships are aimed at students who want to participate in a study program in a country of their home region (here: Kenya/outside their home country).

Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the program.

Documents to be submitted for the 2021/2022 DAAD Scholarship Applications

  1. DAAD application form duly filled in (available in the DAAD-Portal)
  2. Curriculum vitae (please use the European specimen form at http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu), including a list of publications (if applicable).
  3. Recommendation letter(s)by university lecturers(Master 1, PhD 2)
  4. Letter of admission from the host university/institution/network
  5. Certified copies of university degree certificates including transcripts
  6. Letter of motivation and a timetable (if applicable: mentioning the planned research stay in Germany, see “Additional benefits”)
  7. Copy of the passport
  8. If available, information on the recognition of the university degree certificates in the host country.
  9. If applicable, information on the UNHCR registration as a refugee.

Ph.D. candidates have to submit the following additional documents:

  • Declaration of acceptance from the academic supervisor or a commitment letter from the host institution that a supervisor will be assigned.
  • Detailed and precise Ph.D. proposal, including detailed work and timetable (if applicable: mentioning the planned research stay in Germany, see “Additional benefits”).
  • Abstract of the proposal on one page (please include name and title of the proposal.
  • Additionally, a word format of the proposal (10-15 pages) must be submitted via email to [email protected] for plagiarism check.

Eligible Field

  • The In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme supports studies in subject areas with strong relevance to national development.
  • The scholarships at CERM-ESA are available in the following fields: Ph.D. in Sociology of Education and Masters in Education.

2021/2022 DAAD Scholarship Application Criteria

Applicants must meet the following DAAD criteria:

  • Have successfully completed generally a three-year university Bachelor’s degree (Master candidates) or a two-year university Master’s degree (doctoral candidates) with above average results (at least: Second Class/Upper Division).
  • Clearly show motivation and a strong commitment.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the language of instruction.
  • Have generally completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application.
  • Must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country.
  • Should generally be a staff member of a public university, the candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment, from the public sector and/or Alumni of the DAFI-program.
  • Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the program.
