The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is a professional accountancy body established by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1995, with a vision to be a leading global professional body.
ICAN’s mission is to produce world-class Chartered Accountants, regulate and continually enhance their ethical standards and technical competence in the public interest.
The Three ICAN Acts are as follows;
- To determine what standards of knowledge and skill are to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the accountancy profession and to raise those standards from time to time as circumstances may permit.
- Secure in accordance with the provision of the Act, the establishment and maintenance of the registers of fellows, associates, and registered accountants entitled to practice as accountants and auditors and to publish from time to time a list of those persons.
- Perform, through the Council of the Institute, all other functions conferred on it by the Act.
ICAN has over the years certified 38,000 Chartered Accountants who are engaged in value creation in various sectors of the economy. The ICAN examination is for everyone, including non-accounting students and graduates of accounting.

Types of ICAN Examination
The ICAN exam consists of two categories, they are ;
- Accounting Technicians Scheme (West African) Examinations; ATSWA examination is basically for non-accounting students and the examination takes place twice a year (March and September).
- Professional Level Examination; this particular examination is for graduates of accounting and the examination normally takes place around November yearly.
ICAN Examination Registration Requirements
To register for the Professional Students or Accounting Technician Scheme examination, you must have the below requirements;
- The degree of any University or Higher National Diploma of any Polytechnic accredited by the Council.
- Five credit passes in any subject including English Language and Mathematics in the West Africa School Certificate Examination, General Certificate of Education or Senior School Certificate of Education, NECO equivalent not more than two sittings or NABTEB.
- Ordinary National Diploma of any Polytechnic recognized by the Council of the Institute
- National Certificate in Education (NCE) from any College of Education.

To Register As A Professional Student

- The transcripts should be addressed to the Registrar/Chief Executive of the Institute.

To Register For ATWAS Students
The Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa (ATSWA) program is designed to produce middle-level Accounting Technicians within the West African sub-region.
The objectives are to:
- provide a recognized qualification for the accounting and auditing staff employed in the public sector, industry, commerce, and in various offices or practicing accountants
- help meet the need for middle-level accounting personnel in the economy especially for the accounting and finance departments of various government agencies and corporations.
The ATSWA syllabus is divided into 3 parts and each part consists of four (4) subjects.
AAT Certificate is awarded upon successfully completing the Accounting Technicians Scheme of West Africa (ATSWA) Examinations.
The duration for the completion of the 3 level examination is a minimum of 15 months for those with an ordinary level certificate and 6 to12 months for those with a higher certificate but not a degree certificate.
